The time has come (along with the tears from me) for Grayson to start a little itty bit of daycare. My baby boy has gotten so big.
Grayson is wonderful and brilliant and special in so many ways but Grayson is not talking as much as he really should be (you can imagine that is killing his speech language pathologist mother slowly) and Ryan, while an amazing stay at home dad and a truly wonderful father, really doesn't feel like he can foster or support Grayson's language development any more than he has been.
Grayson's language is really blossoming over these last months, he is following tons of directions, labeling almost everything around him (though not necessarily intelligibly) and in general changing rapidly- but he is not intelligible to people other than mom and dad, does not use multiword phrases consistently and is just a little stuck when it comes to interacting with other kiddos. Grayson is also obsessed with his mom still and cannot be patient when it is not always his turn- all the time. The hope is he will play, he will be forced to communicate a bit more, he will hear tons of language, he will be around other children, he will learn to be a little patient and he will become a wee bit more independent.
So here is the plan: Grayson will go to Ms Jenni's house two mornings a week, he will play with the two four year old girls there, he will learn how to wait patiently while the 7 month old baby gets her diaper changed or drinks her milk, and he will have fun and feel brave in a place without mom and dad. Ms Jenni has been an MPS teacher on and off for 10 years, she has run an in home daycare before, she taught K3, K4, and K5, and she lives between home and my work- all of which are super important. The days are flexible, the times are flexible, Grayson seems happy (he cried when I picked him up and we had to leave after his first one hour trial run) and we think we can afford it- so for now all systems are go. I will drop him off on my way to school, Ryan will pick him up sometime before lunch based on when the new baby is awake and Grayson will be home for lunch with Daddy and Baby B everyday and be able to nap in his own bed every afternoon. Then when I come home from work each day- all of my guys will be home waiting for me.
This is big, I think I am having a harder time with it than anyone as it seems like G has gotten so big, but I really feel it is important for him to have these experiences and important to make the transition before the new baby comes. Ryan feels a little guilty that Grayson 'needs' to go to daycare for the exposure but it also a little hopeful that it will ease the transition into a multichild family and is reassured by how much fun Grayson seems to be having at Ms Jenni's. I think that while the transition is a little rough for us both emotionally it really is best for Grayson in the long run, and I will be honest that while on maternity leave with the new baby it will probably be very nice to have a couple of hours a week just with the baby while Grayson is being played with and attended to somewhere else. I am thinking this whole daycare adventure should be only 6-8 hours a week- but that should be enough for some play, some friends, some words, some attention, some independence.
Edited to Add:
It turns out Ms Jenni's is not the place for Grayson- she has taken on too many little babies in the spring and Grayson won't get the attention he deserves because there will be a little baby at home AND two little babies at daycare. So now Grayson will be going to Jody's house starting in September. My friend Wendy's kids went to Jody from birth until school age and think she is the most amazing thing ever- which is a darn good recommendation in my eyes. At Jody's there will be a 3 1/2 year old boy, a 2 1/2 year old boy, an 18 month old boy and Grayson- so lots of boys (I hope that works and doesn't get too rough and tumble) but not too many kids. It will still be just two mornings a week- but it is closer, more affordable and we know more about it than the other place so hopefully it will be as good if not better.
